Maximize Your Success
at Networking Events
Navigating a networking event can feel overwhelming, but with the right approach, you can turn
it into a valuable opportunity to build connections and explore job prospects. Here’s how to
make the most out of your experience:
Set Clear Goals: Before the event, determine what you hope to achieve. Are you seeking
interview opportunities, company information, or networking contacts? Clarifying your
objectives will guide your interactions and help you make the most of your time.
Have a Strategy: Research organizations ahead of time if you know who will be in attendance.
Prioritize the companies you’re most interested in. Be strategic about your approach, avoiding
long lines and maximizing your time with key recruiters.
Prepare Your Materials: Ensure your resume is polished and error-free and
bring multiple copies to distribute to potential employers. Utilize the Career
Studio to receive feedback on your documents.

Dress for Success: Dress professionally! You cannot undervalue a first impression so consider
coming prepared for the job you hope to get. Business casual is recommended, but a suit is also
appropriate if this attire fits the organizational norm for the employer you are visiting.
Professional Casual
Professional Formal
Bottoms: Skirt or dress (not too long
or too short), nice pants, slacks.
A suit with pants, knee-length shirt, blouse,
or button-up shirt.
Tops: Blouse, sweater, shirt with a collar, polo.
A skirt or pants with a blouse and no jacket or a
day dress that is structured and not too dressy.
Avoid shorts, sneakers, t-shirts,
and too much jewelry.
Remember good grooming/hygiene.
Shoes should be appropriate to the outfit and
heels should not be too high.
A suit and tie are best with dress shoes.
A long-sleeved dress shirt with a tie and jacket is
also acceptable.
Ask Thoughtful Questions: Engage with employers by asking insightful questions about their
organization and available opportunities. Avoid inquiries about salary or personal matters,
focusing instead on learning more about the company culture and job responsibilities.
Follow Up: Collect business cards or contact information from recruiters and send personalized
thank-you notes within a week of the event. Express gratitude for their time and reiterate your
interest in potential opportunities.
• Send a thank you email and connect on LinkedIn.
By following these tips, you’ll navigate networking events with confidence and maximize your
chances of success in securing valuable connections and potential job opportunities. Remember,
preparation and professionalism are key to making a lasting impression on recruiters.
