• Provide Materials: Give your recommenders your CV, personal statement, and a summary
of your achievements to help them write a detailed letter.
• Request Early: Ask at least two months in advance of your first deadline. If the individual
has to decline, have a backup recommender in mind.

gratitude.
Writing a Personal Statement
Your personal statement is your opportunity to narrate your academic journey,
professional aspirations, and the reasons you are drawn to a particular program.
Be sure to follow any prompts and requirements by the program(s) you are
applying to. If there are no specific requirements listed, this is a great
outline to follow.
