CV vs. Resume: Understanding the Differences
A Curriculum Vitae (CV) is an extensive document covering your entire academic and
professional history, often used in academic, educational, scientific, or research positions. It
includes publications, awards, presentations, and more detailed descriptions of research or
projects. As you apply to graduate school, you may not have experience in all these sections –
that is ok! Fill in as much as you can based on the experiences you do have.
A resume, conversely, is a concise summary of your skills, experiences, and education, tailored
for a specific job, usually limited to one or two pages.
This CV format allows undergraduate students to effectively showcase their academic
background, research and internship experiences, leadership roles, and technical skills,
making a strong case for their candidacy in graduate programs.
