Career Conversations
Some of the best ways to learn about careers are talking to professionals in the industry and
experiencing it first-hand! Informational Interviews and Job Shadowing are great ways to test
out careers, build your professional network, and learn more about what does and doesn’t
resonate with you in a particular career.
Informational Interviewing = One Conversation
Job Shadowing = Multi-Hour Shadowing Experience
How to Find People
Being referred by someone is a lot easier than making a cold call. Ask a friend, family member,
or career coach if they know anyone who works in your area of interest. Here’s a list of places
to start:
Current/Past Employers • Professors • Coaches • Family
Handshake • LinkedIn • Career Fairs • Social Media
Sample Script for Arranging the Conversation
Hello, my name is [Your Name].
I’m a sophomore at Utah State University majoring in Communications. I am in the
process of researching and exploring the marketing field. At this point in my research,
I’m interested in speaking with someone currently employed in the field. Would it be
possible to meet with you to ask some questions about the marketing industry?
Or is there someone else that you would recommend I talk to?
Thank you for your time and help,
